Ironworker Apprentice

Are you interested in an exciting and challenging career working with your hands? Try ironwork! In the ironworker apprentice program, you will work and earn while you learn. Regular training in the the ironworking trade is provided, allowing you to grow into a professional. Six-month pay increases are provided during the 4 year apprentice program as long as you remain in good standing. You also receive the same benefits as a journeyman during your apprenticeship.

Duties

Ironworkers use their skills and equipment to perform tasks such as erection of steel skeleton of buildings including rigging, bolting and welding, window wall and curtain wall exterior steel erection, steel and cable reinforcing in concrete construction, rigging of heavy machinery and equipment, and general welding in conjunction with all aspects of these job descriptions. Duties may also include acting as a fire watch or confined space attendant where required.

Ironworkers must be able to work at great heights. The work is very strenuous, dangerous, and is often done in adverse weather conditions. Work involves climbing, bending squatting, sitting, standing, and heavy lifting. Ironworkers often work in a noisy environment due to working with or around air-operated tools, heavy lifting machinery, compressors and welding machines. At times, work can be seasonal due to weather conditions or economic situations. Among the hand tools required are wrenches, beaters (heavy hammers), bull pins, sleever bars, wire cutters, tool belts, pouches and safety harnesses and lanyards.

Essential Functions

Attendance: Regular attendance and punctuality are essential for the smooth operation of this company and performance of worker’s duties.
Transportation: Workers must have transportation to get to assigned projects.
Tools & Equipment: Workers must possess and maintain tools and equipment to perform their tasks.
Training and Certification: Workers must complete all necessary training and certification required by OSHA, the American Institute of Steel Construction, and the company.
Physical Stamina: Workers must have high endurance because they spend many hours on their feet while lifting heavy steel components. They must have ability to climb vertical ladders, bend, lift & carry equipment and materials on elevated scaffolds, and maintain balance.
Physical Strength: Workers must be strong enough to move heavy materials components into place. Many are up to 100 lbs. in weight.
Unafraid of Heights: Ironworkers must work at great heights. During steel erection activities, Ironworkers must work several stories above the ground.
Safety: Workers must comply with all OSHA, Union, Company and Project safety requirements and training.
